Self-care is Oxygen: Why Taking Care of Yourself First Makes Perfect Sense

When flying on a commercial airplane, the flight attendant announces "put your oxygen mask on first before helping others". I know this concept, this metaphor. I get it -- but have I always practiced it? In 2017, Sean's seizures were increasing. We tried more than a dozen medications, but nothing controlled the seizures. I didn't know if Sean was going to have 4 seizures a week or 4 seizures a day -- AND if I would be able to catch his fall each and every time! It was decided that I should fly to the East Coast for a Parent Training Conference to learn of additional therapies to help Sean.

So off I went. I was on a "Red Eye" flight. During the flight, I had to get out of my seat. As I stood up, my vision became blurred... then apparently I fainted. The reason I fainted, I forgot to eat the whole day. I arrive at the training. First thing they said, "Parents, take care of yourself."

Because if you don't take care of yourself first, you are in no position -- physically, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually -- to take care of anyone else. Self-care has to be a priority.

Learn how to take care of yourself and become the best possible version of you. So when the time comes, you can be really present for those that need you.

Lesson learned.

BUT, I will be truthful. This was a lesson I had to intentionally practice. I want to encourage you to care and love yourself. Because YOU are worthy, and you deserve it.

Become the best version of yourself today and achieve all the goals you've been meaning to tackle. Get started on self-care today.
